MPP Press Conference on Graduates Employment Statistics

Head of Division of Policy (PPOL) Prof. WU Xun introduced the Master in Public Policy (MPP) program in a media conference yesterday as over 80% of its first batch of graduates received 1 or more job offers despite the downturn in economy. Second year student Justin NG, an undergraduate from New York University who returned to Hong Kong for MPP, said this technology and environmental policy -focused program has given him lots of opportunities amid the innovation and tech development at Greater Bay Area. He already got two job offers before his graduation next June. Fresh graduate PENG Guoxian, now working in Tencent as a Product Manager, talked about how the 2-year program has helped him stand out in job interviews with tech giants. Meanwhile, PPOL is launching a new part-time MPP program next year.

In response to the HKEX’s amendments to the Corporate Governance Code and the Listing Rules, which require listed companies to increase the ratio of female directors, Prof. Christine LOH, Chief Development Strategist of the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), said the revised Code has indeed brought about improvements in the gender composition of boards of directors in Hong Kong-listed companies, but the level of female participation on boards has not yet been the most ideal.

In an exclusive article, Prof. King Lun YEUNG, Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), introduced the 3D-printed cellular scaffoldings of human skin, lung, kidney, and heart cells created by the HKUST-APEL joint laboratory research team as artificial organoids for monitoring air and water pollution to measure their potential harm to human health. Prof. Yeung stated that the laboratory is considering future collaborations with the government to install similar experimental equipment, such as detectors, on streets and buildings. Additionally, more coverage on the HKUST-APEL Joint Lab establishment.

Shrinking child populations discussed at international symposium in Japan

At an international symposium on child-bearing held in Japan, Prof. Stuart GIETEL-BASTEN, Professor of the Division of Public Policy (PPOL), said economic assistance provided by governments to households has not been as effective as expected in reversing the shrinking of child populations, adding that countries will be able to "see a way out of" their declining child populations if they start to regard the challenge not as "a problem to be solved" but as "an opportunity" to change gender roles, work culture, and other social aspects.

He added that the data from insurers and other organizations can be used to quantify climate risks and develop new insurance products related to extreme weather events.
