Major Selection Exercise for First Year Students

First-year students admitted via School-based Admission to four year programs of one of the four Schools (i.e. Science, Engineering, Business and Management, and Humanities and Social Science) may choose to declare an interdisciplinary major upon completion of one year of study at one of the Schools.


Major choices offered by AIS

  • BEng/BSc and BBA Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management (T&M-DDP)
    - One of the 11 School of Engineering majors & one of the 6 BBA majors OR
    - BSc in Biotechnology/BSc in Integrative Systems and Design & one of the 6 BBA majors
  • BSc in Environmental Management and Technology Program (EVMT)
  • BSc in Individualized Interdisciplinary Major Program (IIM)*
     * Students who are interested in IIM should refer to the application procedure here

For details, please refer to AIS Undergraduate Programs. Introduction of AIS majors will be given in Schools' introductory sessions during the orientation.

 

Students who apply to declare T&M-DDP as their major will choose BEng or BSc major at their Year 1 Spring Term and BBA major at their Year 2 Spring Term.

Who Can Apply?

First-year 4-year students from the following Schools can apply for enrollment in AIS majors in the second year of study:

  • School of Science (SSCI) *
  • School of Engineering (SENG) #^
  • School of Business & Management (SBM)^
  • School of Humanities & Social Science (SHSS)^
 * For School of Science (SSCI) students who would like to declare T&M-DDP as major, they can choose BSc in Biotechnology and one of the 6 BBA majors offered to T&M-DDP students.  Please refer to Program Structure offered by T&M-DDP
 # For School of Engineering (SENG) students who would like to declare T&M-DDP as major, they can choose BSc in ISDN/Engineering majors offered by T&M-DDP and one of the 6 BBA majors offered to T&M-DDP students. Please refer to Program Structure offered by T&M-DDP

Application Procedure

Interested students should submit the major selection application via their respective Schools. SHSS students should apply via Program Transfer and submit the application form to AIS directly by the application deadline. The detailed timeline will be announced at the beginning of the Spring term of every year.

SSCI 1 March - 25 April Students should submit the application online via SSCI by 25 April 2024
SENG 27 March - 30 April Students should submit the application online via SENG by 30 April 2024
SBM 2 - 24 April 

Students should submit the application online via SBM by 24 April 2024, together with the followings:

  1. Personal Statement (applicable to T&M-DDP)
  2. Preference of programs in order of priority
  3. Curriculum Vitae
SHSS 3 - 24 April

Students should apply via Program Transfer with the following materials:

  1. Program Transfer Application Form
  2. Pre-admission results
  3. Unofficial Transcript
  4. Curriculum Vitae

should be submitted to joinais@ust.hk by 24 April 2024.

 

Interview Period:   EVMT : mid-late May (1st round), mid-June (2nd round)
                                T&M-DDP : mid-June

Required & Recommended Pre-major Courses for AIS Majors (for 2023/24 cohort)

Students interested in enrolling in interdisciplinary majors are required and recommended to complete certain pre-major courses during the first year of study. Please click here for the required & recommended pre-major course list.

 

SBM students who are interested in T&M-DDP BEng & BBA should also satisfy individual BEng major specific requirements. Please click here for reference.

Scholarship

For the 2023/24 cohort, any student holding renewable recruitment scholarships that were given at the time of admission to HKUST can carry the scholarships to AIS if he/she successfully enrolls in / transfer to AIS programs and meet the scholarship renewal conditions.

Will the chance of enrolling in an interdisciplinary major be different for students studying in different schools in the first year?

No.

What courses should I take in order to be eligible for enrolling in interdisciplinary majors?

Students interested in enrolling in interdisciplinary majors are required and recommended to complete certain pre-major courses during the first year of study. Please click here for the required & recommended pre-major course list.

If I do not meet the pre-major requirement, can I still apply for interdisciplinary programs? Will the chance be lower?

If a student does not meet the pre-major requirement, he or she can still apply for interdisciplinary programs. However, the chance will be lower under normal circumstances.

Is there any enrollment quota for individual interdisciplinary programs?

Yes, there are quotas for enrolling into respective interdisciplinary programs in the second year of the 4-year programs (5-year for Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management). Tentatively, the quota for Individualized Interdisciplinary Major Program (IIM) is 5 and that of the other interdisciplinary programs range from 15 - 23.

No, there are no fixed quotas for students from different schools.
