HKUST Prof. Kei May LAU Elected to the US National Academy of Engineering

Prof. Kei May LAU, Research Professor of the Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA), has been elected as a member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. NAE acknowledges her election to the organization for her significant contributions to photonics and electronics based on III-V semiconductors on silicon. Among a total of 114 new members and 21 international members, Prof. LAU is the sole HK scholar newly elected to the NAE this year. P Prof. Nancy IP extended warm congratulations to Prof. LAU on her election to the NAE, adding that this recognition is a testament to her outstanding contributions and exceptional dedication to research and innovation.

In the "indoor air quality forum" organized by the Clean Air Network (CAN), Prof. Zhi NING, Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies) of Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) and Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), introduced "Clean Air Schools for HK" project, which was carried out in collaboration with CAN. The project collected data on air quality in HK schools from August 2022 to July 2023. Prof. NING stated that these data enabled more efficient analysis to support research on indoor environments and laid a solid foundation for future education and public awareness efforts. Prof. Alexis LAU, Head and Chair Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), also attended the forum.

HKUST Researchers Develop AI-enabled Model to Help Mitigate Global Ammonia Emissions from Cropland by 38%

An international research team led by Prof. Jimmy FUNG, Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning) and Chair Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), has developed an AI model that not only reveals global ammonia emissions from cropland are lower than previously estimated, but also demonstrates how optimizing fertilizer management can effectively reduce emissions by approximately 38%. The study has been published in Nature, providing valuable insights for policymakers worldwide in addressing the UN’s SDGs pertaining to poverty eradication, food security, and sustainable agriculture.

Abraham works to assess the potential environmental impact of civil engineering projects or other private developments, as he advises clients on environmental regulatory compliance. His major programme at HKUST, EVMT, emphasised training students in communication and presentation techniques, and Abraham found himself often going back to the soft skills learned during his days at HKUST to communicate with engineers, or to rely on knowledge acquired during his environmental law course to deal with regulatory matters.

‘No easy exit’: Omicron outbreak tests China’s anti-Covid strategy

In an article on China’s zero-COVID strategy and the recent outbreak in Shanghai, Division of Public Policy Senior Lecturer Prof. Donald LOW said the Chinese government “denigrated and demonized” places which have switched to living with COVID back in 2021, adding that it can’t openly say that they are now switching to living with COVID, even though that is what their public health advisers and epidemiologists think that they eventually have to do.
