In an article on the humanoid created by SZ-based AI Robotics, the Assistant Professor of Division of Arts and Machine Creativity (AMC), Prof. Harry YANG said many robots are programmed for routine tasks, but trends are shifting towards the use of embodied AI. As tasks become more complex and robots are required to understand and act based on different situations, he predicted that it will take about 5 to 10 years before humanoid robots can become truly useful in homes. HKUST has been appointed by the Asia Pacific Observatory on Health Systems and Policies (APO), a collaborative partnership hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO)'s Regional Office for the Western Pacific, to spearhead a regional research consortium focused on digital health innovation. Led by the Associate Professor of Division of Public Policy (PPOL) Prof. Alex HE Jingwei, who is also Acting Director of the Institute for Public Policy (IPP) and Principal Investigator of the consortium, the five-year consortium commencing in 2025 will conduct interdisciplinary research addressing the challenges of aging population in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to his leadership of the Consortium, Prof. He was invited to speak at the World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos in Tianjin, China, addressing how technology and investment in the care economy and social infrastructure can drive inclusive prosperity amid the region’s shifting demographics. Other representatives from HKUST include Dr. Shin Cheul KIM, the Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Knowledge Transfer) of Office of Knowledge Transfer (OKT), and the Chair Professor of Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CIVL), Prof. SU Hui. Speaking at the inaugural Low Altitude Economy Forum hosted by InvestHK last Friday, Prof. LI Mo, Low Altitude Economy Research Center Director and Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Division of Integrative Systems and Design (ISD), highlighted that the development of low-altitude economy hinges on sophisticated AI and automation systems.

A research team, including Prof. RAO Anyi, Assistant Professor in the Division of Arts and Machine Creativity (AMC) and Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA) at HKUST, has developed LINO-UniPS, a new system that works like a super detective with three assistants of different expertise. The assistants work together to accurately separate illumination and surface information of objects from complex images. The research was published at a top computer vision conference on June 23, 2025.

Organized by HKUST(GZ) MC2, the "SURREALITY" exhibition kicked off yesterday. Prof. HUI Pan, HKUST(GZ) Information Hub Associate Dean and Chair Professor of the HKUST’s Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA) who is the exhibition director, noted that digitally generated products will intertwine with reality, and people will become accustomed to virtual products.

The Chief Development Strategist and Adjunct Professor of Division of Environment & Sustainability (ENVR), Prof. Christine LOH delivered a keynote speech at the "Sustainable Shipping – Advancing Decarbonization and Diversity in Maritime Practices" seminar, presented by the HK branches of WISTA and the Nautical Institute at the Foreign Correspondents Club last Friday.
