In an article on the humanoid created by SZ-based AI Robotics, the Assistant Professor of Division of Arts and Machine Creativity (AMC), Prof. Harry YANG said many robots are programmed for routine tasks, but trends are shifting towards the use of embodied AI. As tasks become more complex and robots are required to understand and act based on different situations, he predicted that it will take about 5 to 10 years before humanoid robots can become truly useful in homes. HKUST has been appointed by the Asia Pacific Observatory on Health Systems and Policies (APO), a collaborative partnership hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO)'s Regional Office for the Western Pacific, to spearhead a regional research consortium focused on digital health innovation. Led by the Associate Professor of Division of Public Policy (PPOL) Prof. Alex HE Jingwei, who is also Acting Director of the Institute for Public Policy (IPP) and Principal Investigator of the consortium, the five-year consortium commencing in 2025 will conduct interdisciplinary research addressing the challenges of aging population in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to his leadership of the Consortium, Prof. He was invited to speak at the World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos in Tianjin, China, addressing how technology and investment in the care economy and social infrastructure can drive inclusive prosperity amid the region’s shifting demographics. Other representatives from HKUST include Dr. Shin Cheul KIM, the Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Knowledge Transfer) of Office of Knowledge Transfer (OKT), and the Chair Professor of Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CIVL), Prof. SU Hui. A research team, including Prof. RAO Anyi, Assistant Professor in the Division of Arts and Machine Creativity (AMC) and Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA) at HKUST, has developed LINO-UniPS, a new system that works like a super detective with three assistants of different expertise. The assistants work together to accurately separate illumination and surface information of objects from complex images. The research was published at a top computer vision conference on June 23, 2025.

In an article on the possible brain drain that Hong Kong may face after the social unrest and the COVID-19 pandemic, Division of Public Policy Prof. Stuart GIETEL-BASTEN said that sourcing talent from outside Hong Kong helps mitigate the talent deficit. He said a more sustainable answer is to train people locally and incentivize local graduates to work in less popular areas where they're desperately needed.

PRAISE-HK Helps to Identify Polluted Spots For Students

Using the data provided by PRAISE-HK – a mobile app developed by HKUST scholars that offers real-time personalized statistics on individuals’ exposure to air pollutants, Clean Air Network has identified 50 more polluted spots where students usually gather. The NGO also found that half of the ten locations in Tuen Mun with the highest nitrogen dioxide concentration, are bus stops.

A research team led by Division of Environment and Sustainability Prof. Jianzhen YU and Assoc. Prof. Wan CHAN has recently proved that wearing surgical masks not only reduces the risk of coronavirus infection, but also effective in blocking airborne carcinogens, reducing cancer risks such as lung cancer and leukemia.
