Coronavirus: air pollution improved during China’s lockdowns – and it may have reduced hospital visits

In an article on Mainland China’s improved air quality during its earlier lockdown, Assistant Professor HE Guojun from the Division of Environment & Sustainability (ENVR) said while lockdowns could bring short-term positive health impacts, the long-term health costs arising from limited health care access for chronic patients during the lockdown is also significant. His earlier research published in Nature Sustainability which estimated that about 24,000 to 36,000 premature deaths caused by air pollution may have been delayed due to the lockdowns was also cited.

In an article on data center space race, it was mentioned that two Chinese companies – privately-held Guoxing Aerospace and provincial government firm Zhejiang Lab – have just deployed the first phase of their Xingsuan satellite computing constellation. The Executive Director of Space Science and Technology Institute (SSTI), the Chair Professor of Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CIVL) and Division of Environment & Sustainability (ENVR), Prof. SU Hui was quoted as saying that the Xingsuan system could be transformative for Earth observation and defense applications requiring low-latency and high-throughput edge data processing. A research team, including Prof. RAO Anyi, Assistant Professor in the Division of Arts and Machine Creativity (AMC) and Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA) at HKUST, has developed LINO-UniPS, a new system that works like a super detective with three assistants of different expertise. The assistants work together to accurately separate illumination and surface information of objects from complex images. The research was published at a top computer vision conference on June 23, 2025.
