Hong Kong academics warn hot nights to increase by 50%, this year’s record rainfall will be outstripped and call for coordinated response
27/11/2023
An inter-university research team by HKUST, CUHK and HKU conducted a study on extreme weather events and their impacts on the built environment in Hong Kong. According to climate model projections, the research team indicated that Hong Kong is expected to experience its highest hourly rainfall of 230mm in the 2040s, over 40% higher than the record set during a recent black rainstorm. Prof. Jimmy FUNG, Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning) and Chair Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), said the intensity of rain is going to increase tremendously amid global warming.

Journey in the change of consciousness toward sustainability
25/07/2022
Prof. Christine LOH, Chief Development Strategist of the Division of Environment & Sustainability (ENVR), has published a new journal article on sustainable development at Business Economics. Prof. LOH opines that there has been a gradual global change of consciousness that development must be done in a sustainable manner, including dealing with climate change and biodiversity loss. Policy innovation is just as important as technology innovation. Cross-disciplinary and cross-sector cooperation are vital for innovation and scaling-up, and the right platforms are needed. Universities can reimagine teaching and how their campuses function as sustainability ‘living labs’. The Greater Bay Area in China has opportunities to lead, including in the entertainment and gaming sector.
