Nurturing A New Generation of Technologists and Innovators: IDT Spotlighted in Wen Wei Po

The demand for versatile and tech-savvy innovators has never been higher, as Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to reshape the global labor market. Recognizing this shift, the BSc in Innovation, Design and Technology (IDT)—formerly known as the BSc in Integrative Systems and Design—was recently featured in Wen Wei Po for its unique pedagogy aimed at nurturing a new generation of technologists equipped to lead in an AI-driven world.

As the first experiential learning program of its kind in Hong Kong, IDT equips students with design and systems thinking, specialized technical knowledge, and an entrepreneurial spirit through a "learning-by-doing" philosophy. The program uniquely adopts team-based and project-based learning as its primary methods of instruction.

A pivotal component of the curriculum is the year-long project sequence. Commencing in Year 2, these projects immerse students in industry-partnered initiatives to enhance technical competencies while bridging the gap between design and technology in the real-world. While the second-year project focuses on ideation and prototyping, the third-year project challenges students to tackle technical complexity, sustainability, and marketability. The final year empowers students to define their own projects, managing resources and leadership roles to develop viable solutions. By presenting functional prototypes, students demonstrate significant growth in both business and technical expertise.

Beyond the classroom, IDT encourages students to participate in diverse extracurricular activities, e.g. Bootcamps and Hackathons, to enhance their leadership, research skills, and cultural competence, while gaining first-hand industry experience. This comprehensive approach ensures IDT students are uniquely prepared to thrive in the evolving global landscape.
