The IEEE Photonics Society has honored Prof. Kei May LAU, Research Professor of Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas, with Women in Photonics Excellence Award 2024, recognizing exceptional contributions by women that have significantly impacted the photonics community at large.

Renowned for her pioneering work in hetero-epitaxy using metal organic chemical vapor deposition, Prof. LAU has revolutionized the development of photonics devices and monolithic micro-LED micro-displays. Her innovative approach to merging advanced semiconductors with silicon has not only led to breakthroughs in LED technology but also propelled the field of photonics and optical technology forward.

Prof. LAU's groundbreaking research extends beyond theoretical advancements, finding significant applications in telecommunications and next-generation display technologies. By bridging the gap between academic research and practical industry applications, she has established herself as a true visionary in her field. Prof. LAU's pioneering research in photonics has previously earned her election to the US National Academy of Engineering, a first-of-its-kind honor for a Hong Kong-based researcher.

This recognition not only celebrates Prof. LAU's individual achievements but also highlights the critical role of women in advancing the field of photonics. Her contributions are expected to have lasting impacts on both academic research and industrial applications in the photonics sector.
