The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has achieved a global ranking of 20th in the Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, marking the third consecutive year as the top-ranked university in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland. This recognition highlights HKUST's consistent strengths across multiple Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), reflecting our ongoing commitment to addressing global challenges.
For 35 years, HKUST has been dedicated to translating research into practical solutions for pressing global issues. In 2025, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) approved the establishment of HKUST's State Key Laboratory of Climate Resilience for Coastal Cities (SKL-CRCC). This initiative aims to enhance infrastructure resilience, improve climate risk early-warning systems, and advance sustainable development for coastal cities worldwide.
Furthermore, several HKUST research initiatives have been recognized by UNESCO, gaining inclusion in the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) and the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024–2033). These international endorsements acknowledge HKUST's excellence in education, research, and collaborative efforts with industries and communities, underscoring our dedication to sustainable development.
