AIS provides students with opportunities to turn academic knowledge into real-world impact. Through internships, they collaborate with industry professionals, experience workplace dynamics firsthand, and strengthen the competencies that prepare them for future careers.
Meet Cindy HUI from the Environmental Management and Technology (EVMT) program. She completed her internship at the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) in the summer after her first year of study and recounts her journey:
"I had the privilege of participating in the Summer Innotalent programme at the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) as an intern. I was assigned to the Green Living and Innovation Division, with a focus on carbon neutrality management. The transition from the classroom to live consultancy projects was transformative. I was able to apply what I had learned academically to real-world challenges, moving from theoretical understanding to actionable problem-solving.
The ethos at HKPC is innovation in action, best embodied by our "Dare-to-Try" project. Tasked with designing an indoor carbon dioxide capture prototype, the project required expertise from diverse fields, including environmental science, technology, and business. Collaborating with interns from different backgrounds on this project helped me further develop a cross-disciplinary approach and appreciate ideas from various perspectives.
The learning extended far beyond the office. Field trips to the Greater Bay Area's advanced manufacturing sector served as profound live case studies, while “chit-chat” and networking sessions with senior leaders provided valuable insights into the strategic role of sustainability and innovation in the corporate vision. These experiences vividly showed that the core values of my studies, including systemic thinking, sustainable management, and technological innovation, are critically needed across every industry.
This internship was the perfect complement to my education and my aspirations. It provided the essential link between the theories I had learned and their practical implementation, giving me the confidence and the skills not just to navigate the future of sustainability and innovation in Hong Kong, but to actively contribute to building it. The journey from an idea to its execution is where real impact is made. I am thankful that my studies provided the vision for this path, and my internship at HKPC provided the tools to start walking it."
