Could you tell us about your background?

I am a local student from Hong Kong with a primary background in mathematics. I completed my undergraduate studies in business management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, followed by an MPhil in Contemporary Asian Studies in Germany. I also obtained an MPhil in Technology, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship (TLE) and a PhD in Individualized Interdisciplinary Program (IIP) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Since joining HKUST, I have received substantial support from the Entrepreneur Center, which enabled me to spin off my research into a startup company, Gabi Education Limited, in 2019. This startup focuses on providing technological solutions for students with special learning disabilities (SpLDs). Currently, I am a post-doctoral fellow at the Education University of Hong Kong.

Could you share the reasons of choosing your program at HKUST?

I chose to pursue my programs at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) because it is one of the youngest and most dynamic universities in Asia. HKUST is known for its innovative approach to education and research and has garnered a strong reputation for its commitment to academic excellence and cutting-edge technology, making it an ideal environment for students like me who aspire to be at the forefront of their fields.

In 2019, I was particularly drawn to the Technology, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship (TLE) program, which is the first interdisciplinary program of its kind in Hong Kong. This program aligns perfectly with my ambition to create novel solutions integrating technology, pedagogy, and commercial viability. The flexibility of the TLE program allows me to explore diverse ideas and approaches, fostering creativity and innovation.

Moreover, HKUST is renowned for being open to new ideas and suggestions, encouraging students to challenge conventional thinking and collaborate across disciplines. This supportive atmosphere enhances my learning experience and empowers me to contribute meaningfully to the educational landscape, particularly in developing technological solutions for students with special learning disabilities. Ultimately, my choice of HKUST reflects my desire to be part of a vibrant academic community that embraces progress and transformation.

Could you share your enjoyable experience during your study? And any support and opportunities that have helped with your career development?

I have had numerous enjoyable experiences that have significantly enriched my academic journey. One of the most rewarding aspects of the program is the opportunity for each student to work on their projects, allowing us to transform our dreams into tangible products. The flexibility to choose supervisors who align with our interests and the ability to select courses that cater to our project needs have been invaluable in shaping my educational experience.

I have also had the privilege of representing HKUST in various competitions, which has enabled me to enhance my presentation skills, develop critical thinking, and learn to manage pressure effectively. These experiences have broadened my horizons and helped me establish meaningful connections within the academic and entrepreneurial communities. Although the journey has been challenging, the outcomes have been incredibly fruitful, largely thanks to the supportive environment fostered by my labmates and the collaborative spirit we share.

The supervisors in IIP provide unwavering support for our research and development endeavors, ensuring that we have the guidance necessary to succeed. HKUST invests substantial resources into our projects, enhancing our learning experience. The program's open approach to collaboration has allowed me to expand my network internationally, facilitating valuable partnerships.

Moreover, the absence of strict publication pressures allows me to dedicate my time and energy fully to my academic development. I appreciate the freedom to design my schedule and pursue my research and development goals at my own pace. Overall, my experience at HKUST has been transformative, equipping me with the skills and knowledge necessary for future success in my career.

Do you have any advice for your fellow classmates?

Pursuing a PhD is not an easy decision, as it requires a commitment of 4 to 5 years of your life, during which your work will often consume both day and night. You need to have a clear understanding of your purpose, set achievable goals, and find a trustworthy supervisor, as well as a university that supports your research direction before making this decision.

Appropriate pressure can drive our growth, but if we encounter overwhelming stress, we should take the time to find ways to relieve it and not allow that stress to accumulate. When faced with difficulties, we should not be afraid to reach out for help from others, as some challenges can only be resolved with support. Everyone experiences pressure in whatever they do. By knowing how to find solutions, we can go further and achieve greater excellence.
