Nearly 60 participants, including Environmental Management and Technology (EVMT) freshmen, students, and the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR) faculty members joined the Smart Energy and Green Carbon Cycle Beijing–Hong Kong Summer Camp from August 23 to 28, 2025.
Guided by ENVR faculty members, the six-day program gave participants a unique opportunity to connect lessons from history, modern innovation, and future sustainability. The itinerary featured the Great Wall and Ming Tombs, cutting-edge labs at the China University of Petroleum and Institute of Process Engineering, high-tech companies such as iFlytek and SDL Technology, the Daxing Hydrogen Energy Center, as well as critical urban systems including waste-to-energy and treatment facilities.
Prof. Alexis LAU, Tang Junyuan Professor of Environmental Science, Head and Chair Professor of ENVR, remarked, “This study trip allowed our students to witness firsthand how societies adapt through innovation and collaboration. From large-scale hydrogen initiatives to essential urban systems like waste treatment, the journey underscored that the green transition is not only about protecting the environment but also about shaping the economy and geopolitics of tomorrow.”
Throughout the camp, students engaged with China’s ambitious Dual Carbon targets, reflected on lessons from history and modern development, and gained insights into how science, data, and policy are driving sustainability. The experience broadened their horizons and prepared them to take part in global sustainability challenges ahead.
We would like to thank our hosts in Beijing — including the China University of Petroleum, Institute of Process Engineering, SDL Technology, iFlytek, the Daxing Hydrogen Energy Center, and local waste-to-energy and treatment facilities — for their generous support in making this eye-opening program possible.
