Prof. Alexis LAU, Head and Chair Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR) and Tang Junyuan Professor of Environmental Science, shared his insights on i-CABLE News’ program "InnoAction" (智創未來) on HOY Infotainment channel, discussing how technology and education contribute to Hong Kong's environmental governance.
Prof. Lau explained how his team is using AI and big data to develop early warning systems for extreme weather events. By analyzing global incident patterns, they help the government officials, property managers, and the public prepare for climate challenges before disasters strike Hong Kong.
His team has also created PRAISE-HK, an app to provide real-time and forecasted air quality and health risk information for Hong Kong, leveraging advanced modeling and big data analytics to deliver highly localized and timely air quality updates. In collaboration with the Hong Kong Asthma Society and the Hong Kong Red Cross, they adapted this technology to deliver personalized alerts for asthma patients and other vulnerable groups based on air quality predictions.
Prof. Lau also highlighted the significance of HKUST establishing the Environmental Management and Technology Program (EVMT), which combines environmental science with business knowledge. EVMT graduates are now in high demand, with recent graduates receiving multiple job offers due to the growing need for ESG expertise.
The interview concluded with a discussion about the legislation of the Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals (HKIQEP), with EVMT being the first undergraduate program to receive HKIQEP accreditation.
"This creates a complete pathway," Prof. Lau said. "We train students well, and with proper certification, more companies are willing to hire them, advancing Hong Kong's sustainability goals."
