Congratulations to Prof. Arthur LAU and Prof. Rob SCHARFF!

Prof. Arthur LAU, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies) at the Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) and Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Education at the Division of Environment and Sustainability, and Prof. Rob SCHARFF, Assistant Professor of the Division of Integrative Systems and Design, have been honored with the AIS Teaching Excellence Award 2024/25.

Prof. Lau has been recognized for his comprehensive approach to education, which prioritizes the cultivation of independent thinking, critical analysis, and effective communication skills. Having first received the accolade in 2020/21, he continues to uphold his teaching philosophy which highlights the significance of fostering an engaging and interactive learning atmosphere, allowing students to relate theoretical concepts to real-world situations.

By implementing the CARE framework—Commonality, Accommodation, Relevance, and Engagement—he creates a supportive and inclusive educational experience. Prof. Lau’s dedication to student growth and well-being has strengthened the sense of community among his students in the BSc in Environmental Management and Technology (EVMT) Program, who proudly identify themselves as the “EVMT Family”.

Prof. Scharff has made a significant impact in the classroom through his project-based learning approach. Over the past few years, he has taught multiple courses and received excellent feedback from students. His classes focus on hands-on experiences that enable students to apply their knowledge practically.

Through engaging projects, students are encouraged to think creatively and critically. Prof. Scharff’s commitment to student success is reflected in the achievements of his students, many of whom have pursued prestigious research positions and advanced academic opportunities.

The awards were presented to Prof. Lau and Prof. Scharff during the AIS Faculty Board Meeting on November 11, 2025, in recognition of their excellence in teaching and contributions to student learning. Established in 2017/18, the Teaching Excellence Award aims to honor instructors who have made substantial contributions to the design and teaching of AIS courses, and outstanding contributions to the learning experience and success of our students.

Congratulations to Prof. Arthur LAU and Prof. Rob SCHARFF!
