In recognition of instructors who have made substantial contribution to the design and teaching of courses of  Interdiscplinary Programs Office (IPO) and outstanding contributions to the learning experience and success of students, IPO established the “IPO Teaching Excellence Award” in 2017/18. From this year onwards, an instructor or a team of instructors of IPO undergraduate and postgraduate courses will be awarded.

Prof. Arthur LAU, Program Director of Environmental Management and Technology (EVMT), Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate Programs Coordinator of the Division of Environment & Sustainability (ENVR), is awarded the IPO Teaching Excellence Award 2020/21.

Prof. Arthur LAU teaches various undergraduate and postgraduate courses including ENVR 2010 - Environmental Science Fundamentals, SUST 1000 - Introduction to Sustainability and EVSM 6070 - Environmental Impact Assessment. He serves as the Coordinator of SUST 1000 in ensuring the teaching quality and delivery of the materials. As a result of the high quality delivered, the SUST1000 teaching team led by him received the Common Core Teaching Excellence Award 2020. Prof. LAU also coordinates and consolidates with 10 different corporates in supporting the 10 Capstone Projects for the EVMT final year students. Students give very positive feedbacks to Prof. Arthur LAU’s courses and particularly appreciate the interactive class design and how approachable and helpful he is.

Besides excellent course teaching, Prof. Arthur LAU spends a lot of time in mentoring UG and MSc students and has built up mutual-friendly and supportive relationships among the senior and junior students. Through various off-class activities, ENVR students have developed a strong sense of belonging to the Division. Prof. LAU is described as a role model who inspires and motivates students outside the classroom and imparts knowledge inside it.  

The award was presented to Prof. Arthur LAU at the IPO Faculty Board Meeting held on 11 April 2022.
