Bumpy road ahead as Hong Kong strives to regain chips crown

In an article on the challenges faced by HK’s chips industry, Prof. Chi Ying TSUI, Head of the Division of Integrative System and Design (ISD), said that efforts to boost the chips industry have to be matched by sustained programs in training, retaining, and wooing semiconductor talents. He added that some HKUST graduates have left HK due to poor career prospects, but the supply of talents will not be a problem if there are enough opportunities for research and development.

In a study in Science Magazine, Prof. Albert PARK, Chair Professor of the Division of Public Policy (PPOL) explained how “green nudges” - prompts to promote environmentally friendly behaviors – could reduce single-use cutlery from online food delivery in China. If green nudges were applied to all of China, more than 21.75 billion sets of SUC would be saved annually—equivalent to eliminating 3.26 million metric tons of plastic waste and save 5.44 million trees.

Anti-Microbial Hydrogel Technology's Trial Run in Public Housing Estates

An anti-microbial hydrogel technology developed by Division of Environment and SustainabilityITB Prof. YEUNG King-Lun and funded by Innovation and Technology Bureau for use in flush water was applied to three public housing estates for trial run, and has been proven effective in reducing more than 95% of viable microbes and inactivating more than 99% of viral particles in toilet flushing water for up to 60 days. The technology will have a chance to be applied to other public housing estates if the trial run is successful.

He added that it takes time to observe if the new administration could find the right balance between the two worlds.

In a press conference, a research team led by Prof. YEUNG King-Lun from Division of Environment and Sustainability introduced the team’s latest development of two multifunctional hydrogels – MOC hydrogel, which has been applied to different drainage sites in HK and proven effective in treating odor problems, and AMGel, which is now being trialled at public housing blocks and is proven effective in killing 95% of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and 99% of the Omicron in flush water.

Separately, in an article on China’s zero-COVID strategy, Prof. GIETEL-BASTEN said that the Chinese government may still view harsh lockdown restrictions as more acceptable than forcing the elderly to get vaccinated.
