Led by Prof. Jianping Gan, Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability, and his team, the large-scale theme-based OCEAN_HK project has generated broad impact on strategies to deal with aggravating hypoxia and overall marine environment management in Hong Kong. We have been and are still providing important new scientific information and evidence to the Hong Kong government’s Environment Protection Department (EPD), Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD). In addition, AFCD, HKO, and EPD have requested use of our databank of field/modeling data from our pioneering mapping and time-series buoy monitoring of hydrography properties, eutrophication, and hypoxia in the Pearl River Estuary, adjacent continental shelf and Hong Kong waters. They are also seeking our expert assistance to set up a monitoring system in Hong Kong waters and the Pearl River Estuary. All these unprecedented efforts have built close science-stakeholder linkages and integration for effective policy and advanced management in Hong Kong and its adjacent waters. We facilitate the interactive data platform as well as provide our expertise to these stakeholders.
