The Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP) in collaboration with the Office of Knowledge Transfer (OKT) offered a new interdisciplinary course TEMG4000G “Deep Tech Start-up Business Plan” in Fall 2023-24.
Led by Mr. Daniel CHUN (Lecturer of Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies), a group of both undergraduate and postgraduate students explored the process of commercializing innovative IP developed by deep tech start-ups, through the project-based experiential learning and meetings with principal investigators. The students were divided to dive into two deep tech projects: the use of AI technologies and proprietary data models to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the orthodontics dental implant industry, as well as a new digital twin platform using the latest BIM, AI, and IoT technologies in facility management.
They presented their coursework deliverables to the project owners and principal investigators involved in commercializing the deep tech projects with the aim of raising funds for their deep tech ventures on Nov 29, 2023. Prof. Jack CHENG (Associate Head and Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering), the principal investigator for the digital twin/BIM project, was impressed by the students’ ideas which can help his project team advance the business planning process and financial model ready for further funding and commercialization. Prof. CHENG has approached the students to start working part-time on his project.
Minseong KIM, a first-year PhD student at ISD, shares, "I really think TEMG4000G is a great course, and it was very practical. I even learnt on topics such as patent claims and financial modelling". TEMG4000G is offering in Spring 2023-24 again, backed by the positive feedback from the students.
