Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common and incurable condition encompassing chronic bronchitis and emphysema that causes irreversible lung damage and progressively worsens without proper management. Leading the charge to address this healthcare gap, Prof. ZHANG Qian, Head of the Division of Integrative Systems and Design, recently sat down with the HOY TV program "Health Concern Group" (健康關注組) to showcase a groundbreaking AI-powered home healthcare management system designed to bring clinical-grade monitoring directly into the patient's living room.

During the episode, Prof. Zhang shared how this AI-powered home healthcare system is transforming COPD management by seamlessly integrating three pioneering technologies, including:
•    the world's first earbud device capable of clinical-grade lung function assessment through simple and natural exhalation;
•    a smartphone software solution representing the highest precision worldwide for daily monitoring and predicting acute COPD exacerbations by tracking early warning signs;
•    the world’s first contactless breathing rehabilitation solution that utilizes depth-sensing cameras to provide patients with real-time visual biofeedback, ensuring their breathing exercises are performed safely and effectively at home.

"This system aims to empower patients to effectively monitor and manage their condition from the comfort of their homes, and will be implemented in one of the largest senior care centers in Mainland China," Prof. Zhang noted, highlighting the project's potential to reduce hospital readmissions and significantly improve the daily quality of life for COPD patients.

Further solidifying its social impact and technological breakthrough, this innovation was honored with the Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva.
