Two innovative projects led by faculty from the Division of Integrative Systems and Design (ISD) have been selected in the latest round of the Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab (SSC) program, which transforms HKUST campus into a testbed for pioneering solutions in sustainability and community well-being.

Professor LI Mo’s project, “GenAI for better building comfort”, aims to advance sustainable energy management on campus. By applying artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, the project optimizes the operation of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, striking a balance between reducing energy consumption and ensuring indoor comfort. This initiative not only supports HKUST’s decarbonization efforts but also has the potential to inform wider adoption of smart building technologies across Hong Kong and beyond.

Assistant Professor Tristan BRAUD’s project, “Collective digital moodboard for the community”, takes an interdisciplinary approach to foster emotional well-being and environmental awareness. Drawing inspiration from oceanic soundscapes, the project converts QR-submitted mood responses from the community into AI-generated designs for a collaborative campus display. By integrating design, technology, and community care, this project highlights ISD’s unique role in addressing both the environmental and social dimensions of sustainability.
