The HKUST Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Team, including Year 2 student Wesley LEUNG and Year 1 student Jack CHAN studying Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP), won the Hong Kong Regional Champion in the MATE International ROV Competition 2023. The HKUST ROV Team, a sub-team of the HKUST Robotics Team, will represent Hong Kong to take part in the finals of MATE International ROV Competition 2023 in the US from 22-24 June.
In the Hong Kong regional competition organized by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) from 29-30 April, teams were required to build underwater robots to overcome real-life scenarios, including underwater photogrammetry of coral reefs and marine renewable energy maintenance. They also had to create promotional materials for their ROV, such as a team presentation, marketing display, technical report, and safety documentation. The judges evaluated each team's performance based on their engineering skills and business acumen.
Wesley said, “As the team leader for this competition, I can say that I have personally learned a lot from the experience. I am particularly grateful to the HKUST Robotics Team and the School for providing such an excellent platform for students to participate in these competitions, enabling me to apply what I have learned through the T&M-DDP program in practical settings.”
Congratulations again to Wesley and Jack!
