EVMT Field Trip to Hangzhou 2024
02/10/2024

#learningwithoutboundaries

39 students from the Environmental Management and Technology (EVMT) program, including the freshmen, embarked on a five-day study trip to Hangzhou, China from August 25 to 29, 2024. Led by 6 faculty members from the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), students examined Anji County's transition from industrial development to sustainable environmental practices, and explored how this integration enhances the quality of life for local residents while fostering community development, providing valuable insights into practical sustainability solutions.

Leveraging technology is essential for addressing today’s sustainability challenges. The students also had the opportunity to visit Alibaba Xixi Park, where they gained exposure to cutting-edge technological advancements. This visit facilitated meaningful exchanges between HKUST faculty and Alibaba's senior management, focusing on potential collaborations. Key topics of discussion included HKUST's development and growth, environmental research initiatives at the university, Alibaba's company growth, and its partnerships with local and Hong Kong universities, including the recent co-establishment of an AI lab.

During the visit, HKUST faculty also shared insights into the university's research advancements such as big data in environmental health and sensor technology, highlighting areas of potential synergy with Alibaba's technological expertise.

This study trip provided EVMT students with a comprehensive understanding of sustainable development practices in action, allowing them to think critically about the balance between environmental conservation and economic growth. It also offered valuable networking opportunities within the EVMT community and with the industry leaders in technology and sustainability.
