#experiencewithoutboundaries

36 students from the Environmental Management and Technology (EVMT) program and the Environmental Science and Management (EVSM) program embarked on an enriching study trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from January 5 to 10, 2025.

Led by Prof. Arthur LAU, EVMT and EVSM Program Co-Director, and Prof. Laurence DELINA, Assistant Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), the study trip provided our students with invaluable opportunities to engage with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaya and the City Council. The explorations also included visits to the Agricultural Heritage Park, Gamuda Cove’s Indah Paya Wetland, the Bestari Jaya Tin Mine and the Batu Cave Temple, etc.

Prof. Lau remarked, “The trip broadened student's perspective and deepened their understanding of both public and private management of natural wetlands. It highlighted the importance of balancing development with conservation and raised awareness of nature-based solutions. A prime example of this was our visit to Gamuda Cove’s Indah Paya Wetland, which is part of a 1,530-acre modern smart township adjacent to wetlands and forest reserves, recognized as Malaysia's first 5-Diamond Low Carbon City. Additionally, visiting a tin mine allowed us to learn about sustainable operation and production, while discussions with the City Council focused on the sustainable (re)development of Kuala Lumpur.”

In the study trip, students gained valuable international exposure and built connections with peers and professionals in Malaysia's environmental sector. These cross-cultural exchanges enhanced their global perspective on environmental management and sustainability practices.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Prof. LIEW Ju Neng, Associate Professor of the Department of Earth Science and Environment, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and his team, for their invaluable support in coordinating all the visits. This experience was truly eye-opening and enriching for everyone involved!
