Environmental Science, Policy and Management Student Wins the IPO Best Research Award 2014/15

The Interdiscplinary Programs Office (IPO) announced Mr. LEE Berto Paul Yok Long (third-year PhD student of Environmental Science, Policy and Management program) as the recipient of the IPO Best Research Award 2014-15 in the award ceremony held on 4 May 2015. 

The IPO Best Research Award was established in 2011 with the support of the Office of the Executive Vice-President & Provost to recognize outstanding achievements by research postgraduate students who made the most original and influential research achievements outcome from their study that has been carried out mainly at HKUST. The key objective of the Best Research Award is to foster the overall quality of research education in the University.

The Selection Committee, comprising Prof. Alexis Lau (Chair), Prof. Richard So (Division of Biomedical Engineering) and Prof. Jianzhen Yu (Division of Environment), assessed candidates on the research impact and output on evidence-based criteria based on candidates’ work done at HKUST. 

Mr. Berto Lee, the third-year PhD candidate of the Environmental Science, Policy and Management program, was selected as the recipient of the IPO Best Research Award 2014-15. Berto has published two first-authored papers in two prestige journals, Aerosol Science and Technology and Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmosphere on aerosol research, chemical characterization and source appointment of ambient particular matter (PM). 

The recommendation from the Selection Committee, highlighted the impact of Berto’s work: ‘Berto has a very solid background on the area of his research and his research output have significant implication to China on solving the air pollution issue’. 

More about IPO Best Research Award

The IPO Best Research Award accepts both self-nominations by students and nominations by supervisors. All research postgraduate students who are registered students of IPO in the award year, including those who graduate in Spring semester of the award year, are eligible to apply. Nomination is normally invited in the Spring semester of an award year.
