Prof. HUI Pan, Chair Professor of the Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA) and Dr. ZHANG Rong, Senior Lecturer of EMIA were featured in a recent episode of “Hong Kong Perspectives” on Phoenix TV, discussing the innovative metaverse classroom transforming education.

Prof. Hui and Dr. Zhang co-teach the first cross-disciplinary, cross-campus, and cross-reality course “EMIA 6500C: Metaverse Cross-disciplinary Design Thinking” at HKUST, that they share how this virtual environment and innovative pedagogy enhance student engagement and collaboration, breaking down traditional learning barriers. They also discuss the possibilities that metaverse technology brings to education.

In the Fall semester of 2023, HKUST and HKUST (Guangzhou) jointly launched this ground-breaking course that has combined metaverse and design thinking. Ten students from different disciplines at HKUST and HKUST (Guangzhou) immersed themselves in the metaverse classroom, overcoming the limitations of physical restrictions, to learn design thinking and its application in metaverse education. Under the guidance of course instructor Prof. Pan HUI and Dr. Rong ZHANG, the students unleashed their creativity, explored the boundaries of metaverse education, and attained surreal learning experiences that cannot be achieved in the real world.
