AMC & EMIA research team won the Best Paper Honorable Mention Award in IEEE VR 2025

The research team led by Prof. XU Xian, Research Assistant Professor of the Division of Arts and Machine Creativity (AMC) and Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA), won the Best Paper Honorable Mention Award at the IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces (IEEE VR) 2025.


Co-authored by AIS Dean and EMIA Head Prof. QU Huamin, EMIA Chair Professor Prof. HUI Pan, WEI Zheng studying PhD in Individualized Interdisciplinary Program (IIP), other PhD students SUN Jia and LIAO Junxiang, and members from other universities, the award-winning research paper titled "Illuminating the Scene: How Virtual Environments and Learning Modes Shape Film Lighting Mastery in Virtual Reality" presents the impact of virtual environments and collaboration on learning film lighting techniques in VR education. It offers insights into optimizing VR environments to enhance learning outcomes in both individual and collaborative settings.

About the work


Film MetaStudio is a virtual reality (VR) based film education platform designed to provide immersive and interactive film production learning experiences for students. The platform covers essential film production aspects such as cinematography, lighting design, and art direction, and supports personalized learning and collaborative teamwork. 


The platform is equipped with various professional virtual lighting equipment, detailed prop models, and handheld VR cameras. Students can freely adjust lighting setups, manipulate virtual cameras, and record scenes in real time, closely simulating the authentic filmmaking process. The intuitive interaction design and flexible scene configuration of Film MetaStudio enhance learning efficiency and significantly boost students' creative expression and exploration. Through cost-effective and highly immersive VR technology, Film MetaStudio enables students to quickly master essential filmmaking skills through practical experience, fostering their creativity and teamwork capabilities.
