Could you tell us about your background?
I am a medical doctor by profession, having graduated in medicine in 2010 before pursuing a career in preventive medicine. Over the years, I have worked with some of the world's leading healthcare organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), International Medical Corps, Save the Children, and World Vision International. My keen interest in clinical research led me to pursue a PhD in Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM) at HKUST in 2015.
Originally from Pakistan, I am now an Australian Permanent Resident and currently work as a Clinical Research Fellow at a public sector tertiary hospital under Queensland Health. In this role, I oversee Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) clinical trials within the Vascular Surgery Department. My qualifications and expertise have been well recognized by the Australian healthcare system, enabling me to take on a leading role in designing, conducting, training, and managing PAD trials for Queensland Health.
Could you share the reasons of choosing your program at HKUST?
As the Deputy Director of Infectious Diseases in Makkah Province of Saudi Arabia, I recognized the urgent need for a foolproof antimicrobial system to prevent hospital-acquired infections. My research aimed to break the chain of infection between the environment and humans. After thorough exploration, I found that the interdisciplinary PhD program in ESPM at HKUST aligned perfectly with my vision of developing long-lasting antimicrobial systems for hospital environments.
Additionally, HKUST offered a generous postgraduate studentship, covering both living and tuition expenses, which significantly relieved my financial concerns. I was fortunate to have Prof. YEUNG King Lun as my supervisor, who provided unwavering support throughout my academic and research journey—from refining lab and field trials to guiding me in patent submissions and publications.
Furthermore, the Division of Environment and Sustainability played a crucial role in strengthening my research pathway by providing state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and facilitating the transition from laboratory testing to clinical trials. This comprehensive support made HKUST the ideal place to pursue my PhD.
Could you share your enjoyable experience during your study? And any support and opportunities that have helped with your career development?
The ESPM program at HKUST provided an exceptional platform for interdisciplinary learning, allowing me to engage with researchers from diverse fields and discuss ideas in a multidisciplinary environment. One of the most enriching aspects of my experience was the opportunity to collaborate with friends and colleagues from Germany, China, France, Spain, Kenya, India, and Hong Kong, fostering a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and mutual support.
As a postgraduate student, I played an active role in the PG Student Society, where we worked to enhance the academic and social experience for fellow students. I was also honored to serve as a member of the University Senate (2016–2017), representing postgraduate student concerns to the university's senior leadership.
HKUST provided invaluable opportunities for my academic and professional growth, including an overseas research exchange in Spain, which significantly enhanced my research findings. The university’s strong reputation and exceptional research environment played a crucial role in my selection for the Global Talent Visa, ultimately leading to my Australian Permanent Residency in 2021.
Do you have any advice for your fellow classmates?
