Diversed Prospects for IIM Graduates
Individualized Interdisciplinary Major (IIM) was developed in 2016/17 to provide select students with academic freedom to create an interdisciplinary major tailor-made to their intellectual interests. Being a graduate student, a software developer, or an energy consultant, IIM graduates are well-equipped to further pursue their novel career paths. We allow students to explore without boundaries!
T&M-DDP International Business Case Competition in USA
2019 Winter International Technology & Management Business Plan Competition was held at San Francisco of USA from 2 to 12 January to explore new business opportunities made possible by advancements in transportation and information communication technologies within the San Francisco Bay Area transportation ecosystem. 12 Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP) students formed mixed teams with students from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign of USA, University of Bayreuth of Germany and University of Sao Paulo of Brazil.

New MPhil/PhD Program - Individualized Interdisciplinary Program (IIP)
IPO developed a MPhil/PhD in Individualized Interdisciplinary program over the year and will be launched in 2019/20 offers broad academic freedom for students to create a unique interdisciplinary program focused on a specialized area of research in ways that best suit their own intellectual interests and passions and use courses from different Departments/Divisions from the same or different Schools. It will be one of the first in Asia to explore this pioneering research postgraduate education mode.
Explore "Environmental Challenges" in Germany
9 students of Environmental Management and Technology Program (EVMT) and 13 students from MSc / PGD in Environmental Science and Management Program, led by Dr. Meike SAUERWEIN, visited Germany from 5 – 12 January 2019 to understand the environmental challenges faced by Germany, the biggest economy in Europe, and how German Government and non-governmental sectors tackle the issue.

PRAISE-HK is Officially Launched!
The PRAISE-HK system, developed by scientists of Institute for the Environment, combines state-of-the-art sensor technologies, big data, air quality modelling systems, and exposure science to effectively analyze and forecast the air quality in Hong Kong down to the street level.With the PRAISE-HK mobile app, users will gain convenient access to real-time, location specific air pollution information about their neighbourhoods and surroundings thus helping users make informed decisions about their daily routines.

The Asia-Pacific Public Policy Network (AP-PPN) Conference 2019
The Asia-Pacific Public Policy Network (AP-PPN) was founded in 2016 as a professional organization to facilitate scholarly communication and exchanges among academics, students and practitioners interested in policy studies in the Asia-Pacific region.The theme for AP-PPN Conference 2019 aims to assemble a consortium of public policy academics in the Asia-Pacific region in order to encourage the formation of national public policy forums.
The Global Research Forum on Sustainable Production and Consumption 2019
There is growing alarm and political tensions surrounding the ecological and social challenges reflected in the Paris Climate Agreement, IPCC report, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There is a clear need to scale the translation of ‘know-how’ and solutions in order to transform systems of production and consumption towards sustainability.Given this context, the fourth international conference of the Global Research Forum on Sustainable Production and Consumption (GRF) was hosted by HKUST om 26-29 June 2019 to take stock of sustainable production and consumption (SPAC) research, and accelerate the engagement of researchers with knowledge users in business, policy and practice.

Advanced Sensor on UAV Monitoring Vessel Emissions
The Institute for the Environment (IENV) conducted a research funded by The Environmental Protection Department(EPD) to develop a new senor system on UAV for real-time measurement of vessel emissions to help the enforcement of the tightened Air Pollution Control (Fuel for Vessels) Regulation that mandates all vessels within Hong Kong waters to use compliant fuels with a sulphur content less than 0.5%.

IPO Supports Elderly Academy Scheme
HKUST participated in the Elder Academy Scheme jointly launched by the Labour and Welfare Bureau (LWB) and the Elderly Commission (EC) in Spring 2018-19. IPO supported the scheme by offering the course SUST1000 - Introduction to Sustainability and received positive feedback from the senior students.
