A team of Year 3 undergraduate students from the Division of Integrative Systems and Design (ISD)—Fiona FENG Shiqi, Lucy LU Yan, Chloe YUEN Yui Tung, and Jeremy WONG Chun Ka—has clinched the Gold Prize in the Artistic and Cultural Innovation track at the 2025 Inter-university GenAI Hackathon for the SDGs, standing out among 20 teams from universities across Hong Kong.

Their winning project “Legendary Horizons” features a shoulder-worn smart robot that acts as a personal guide, addressing the common challenge of keeping young visitors engaged. Often finding exhibits dull and descriptions too complex, children can now enjoy interactive conversations as the robot uses AI to recognize artworks and deliver simple, tailored explanations that resonate with a child’s understanding.

This innovative project showcases the multi-disciplinary skills and expertise of the team members, who develop innovative problem-solving abilities through hands-on learning in their BSc in Innovation, Design and Technology program. Fiona leads the development of the AI chatbot, while Chloe focuses on the visual recognition of artworks. Lucy designs the mechanical structure and product casing, and Jeremy manages the speech recognition and audio transmission components.

This annual Hong Kong-wide university hackathon aims to encourage the application and entrepreneurship of multimodal Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies towards socially beneficial purposes and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
