Project teams led by ENVR and ISD Faculty made remarkable contributions to HKUST's record-breaking success at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, with four pioneering inventions receiving prestigious awards.
A Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury was awarded to the team led by Prof. YEUNG King-Lun, Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), for their innovative method of controlling algal growth in water. Without relying on heavy metals or antibiotics, their multi-functional delivery system uses inorganic matrices for dosing dissolvable sodium chlorite to effectively eliminate harmful microbes and algae, significantly enhancing water quality.
Developing the world's first smart feeding pump with a closed-loop system, the team led by Prof. ZHANG Qian, Head of the Division of Integrative Systems and Design (ISD), earned a Gold Medal for their "NutriCare Smart Feeding Pump." They created a revolutionary solution for nasogastric tube patients, integrating advanced AI technologies for gastric suction, autofeeding, nutrition analysis, and recipe adjustment.
ENVR Chair Professor Prof. SU Hui’s team also won a Gold Medal for "SpaceGPT", a platform that enables natural language queries of satellite imagery through a fine-tuned vision language model, offering versatile analysis across multiple remote sensing applications and transforming how researchers interact with spatial data.
Last but not least, the team led by ENVR Head Prof. Alexis LAU received a Silver Medal for "Personalised Real-Time Air Quality Informatics System for Exposure (PRAISE)." This mobile app provides street-level air quality information, route suggestions, and personalized health advice to help users reduce pollution exposure.
