Could you tell us more about you?

Before joining HKUST, I worked, studied, and sunbathed at Stanford University. I study Human AI for Creativity. My research focuses on human-centered reliable intelligent vision and media tools, such as multimedia (text, images, video, design graphics, audio) editing, creation, and film analysis, aiming to enhance collaboration between artificial intelligence and humans, and unleash human creativity and productivity. The research spans computer vision, human-computer interaction, graphics, and multimedia, with flexible directions, aiming to create wonderful things together!

I am teaching EMIA 6500H, AI for Visual Content Creation, which is a great opportunity to learn this exciting new interdisciplinary direction of art and tech.

What inspired you to specialize in this line of research?

Passion is always our top priority for innovation, whether creating code, algorithms, or beautiful content, telling our own story, or making the tools we want to use.

What impact do you want your work to have on society?

I am thrilled and honored to join the newly established Division of Arts and Machine Creativity at HKUST. The new division provides an amazing platform for young faculties like me to embark on an exciting journey to facilitate the intersection of technology, art, and humanities that promises to fuel unparalleled creativity and innovation to us.

It not only deepens our understanding of the human condition but also fosters environments that nurture both creativity and overall well-being. As we move forward, I am excited to collaborate with our talented colleagues, students, and the broader community to explore these innovative frontiers. Together, we will contribute to a dynamic and vibrant academic unit where technology and art come together to inspire, innovate, and create a better future for all.

Do you have any advice for students interested in your research area?

Pursue our passion. Every new feeling precious, and genuine passion can help us produce impactful work!

Could you share a fun fact about you?

My English name is Ray, which comes from the first letter of my Chinese name Rao An Yi.
