With the substantial contribution made in designing and teaching exemplary common core courses, and in promoting these courses to the students in the University community, Prof. James WONG, Senior Lecturer and Prof. Naubahar SHARIF, Acting Head and Professor from the Division of Public Policy (PPOL), won The Common Core Teaching Excellence Award and The Honorary Mention respectively in the HKUST Common Core Teaching Excellence Award 2022.

Prof. WONG has successfully transformed the course "Understanding Comparative Politics (SOSC 3520)" into an interactive and activity-oriented course. By adopting case pedagogy and incorporating role play, objective commentary, and group work, students explore political questions and develop respect for diverse perspectives. They connect theoretical concepts to real-world contexts, gaining a deeper understanding of political regimes, actors, and institutions globally.

Prof. WONG utilizes E-platforms to facilitate participation and interaction, combined with multifaceted assessments to evaluate critical analysis and communication skills. His detailed feedback enhances students’ capabilities and confidence. Students appreciate his passion, engaging teaching style, and ability to broaden their perspectives on politics. They commend his dedication to pushing the boundaries of their thinking, presentation, and writing skills.

Prof. SHARIF’s course “Science, Technology and Society in China (PPOL 2110)” takes a holistic approach to knowledge-building. He goes beyond simply delivering information and strives to create a partnership with his students, inspiring them to learn and apply new skills and attitudes in their lives. The course consists of four engaging modules that progress from foundational to challenging topics. The course materials explore the interconnectedness of science, technology, and public policy in China and its relationship with the West.

Prof. SHARIF employs a blended-learning approach, utilizing digital platforms and technologies. Students have the flexibility to access pre-recorded course videos, allowing them to self-direct their studies and cultivate lifelong learning skills. Face-to-face tutorials, group discussions, and debates foster critical thinking and encourage constructive and sensitive opinion-sharing. Students appreciate the high-quality course videos and report improved abilities to evaluate the impact of science and technology on society. They also recognize their enhanced analytical and expressive skills.
