The Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR) of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today received a generous donation of HK$1 million from Great Eagle Group to set up the “Great Eagle Group Scholarship” in celebration of its 60th Anniversary. The scholarship aims to encourage ENVR undergraduate students to contribute to local sustainable development.
Officiating at the scholarship agreement signing ceremony were Great Eagle Holdings Limited Executive Director, Mr. Alexander LO, HKUST Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning) Prof. Jimmy FUNG, HKUST Director of Interdiscplinary Programs Office (IPO) Prof. Huamin QU and HKUST Head of ENVR Prof. Alexis LAU.
At the ceremony, Prof. Jimmy FUNG expressed his gratitude to Great Eagle Group for the donation, saying, “We are pleased to collaborate with Great Eagle Group, who share the same vision with us in bringing sustainability to the future generations. With the Group’s generosity, together we will groom tomorrow’s leaders with a strong sense of environmental responsibility and a dedication to sustainable development in Hong Kong, the region and the world.”
Mr. Alexander LO said, “This year marks the Great Eagle Group’s 60th anniversary, and we are delighted to launch the scholarship programmes at this significant milestone. The programmes give recognition to students with outstanding academic achievements to support their pursuits. The Group places great importance on sustainable development. The programmes reflect our commitment to cultivating talent in the industries, also providing young people with opportunities, to empower them to develop their potential and shape a sustainable future together.”
Following the ceremony, Mr. Alexander LO and guests from Great Eagle Group visited several featured facilities at HKUST, including Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) Laboratory and the Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab, and watched a demonstration of an innovative personalized air quality health mobile app “PRAISE-HK”, to understand various HKUST initiatives in driving the sustainable development and solving air pollution problems in the Greater Bay Area.
The Scholarship will benefit 40 ENVR undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Management and Technology or Sustainable and Green Finance, who have demonstrated strong passion for sustainability and possessed attributes to contribute to the community, from academic year 2022/2023 to 2026/2027.
